Seth Jacobs and guest conductor Jeffrey Keever at the Christmas concert.

A life well played

Besides incredibly talented musicians, volunteers are the life blood of an orchestra. Every concert performed by the TPO requires numerous volunteers to fulfill multiple tasks. Every one of these fine people deserve recognition, and one of the shining stars was at the December Christmas concert.

I received word from a friend that Seth Parks was a young man with Down Syndrome and a passion for classical music. My friend asked me to use him as a volunteer at the Christmas concert and introduce him to the conductor, which would be the highlight of his evening. I said, “Absolutely!” So, Seth and his mom, Debbie Jacobs, enthusiastically worked at the door greeting guests and handing out programs. Before the concert began, I introduced them to our guest conductor, Jeffery Keever, who graciously answered all of Seth’s questions. After the concert, I decided to learn more about this fascinating young man.

From a very early age, Seth showed a passion for music. His mother stated that listening to music played a part in helping him learn to speak. He especially has a love for classical music. Over the years, Seth has been known to watch YouTube videos and follow the motion of conductors as they lead the musicians.

As a teenager, Seth attended Blackman High School and was a member of the school choir, under the leadership of Gerald Patton. This program not only further developed his love of music but helped to develop his social skills.

Seth has also taken part in theatrical performances with the Arts Center of Cannon County. He was a member of the cast and chorus of several plays.

Currently, Seth is furthering his education at the Possibility Place in Murfreesboro. This is a school for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

I asked Seth’s mother what she wants people to know most of all about her son. She said, “He’s an individual that is showing the world he’s capable and should not be counted out.”

At the TPO, we intend to count Seth in! He’s a man with a mission to live life to the fullest and Down Syndrome is not going to hold him back. He is a shining star.
